Open Letter To Tumblr.

Dear Jeff,

Dear Tumblr @staff ,

I’ve read your new guidelines with great interest and care and I must say you’ve missed a huge opportunity to become a leader in Internet community safety.

Let me explain:

First of all, as an adult and a parent I wholeheartedly applaud your efforts in making Tumblr a place where minors can explore the Internet in a safe environment. You have my full support in banning any and all form of child pornography! So in all sincerity kudos to you for taking this step.

Having said that, as a parent, I know all too well how forbidding a certain toy/food/activity to my offspring will turn it into a forbidden fruit. Coming down on my kids like a maddening fury yelling they’re not allowed to do drugs for example is by no means a guarantee they won’t end up with a needle in their arm. Harsh, I know, yet a reality nonetheless.

The same applies to sexuality in all it shapes and forms. Taking all adult content away form Tumblr will only push all these curious youngsters to go and explore elsewhere and we all know the Internet showcases fucked up stuff!

Also, trust me when I say my young teenage offspring has quite the sexual imagination already.

Turning sex and/or nudity into a taboo is not helping my offspring. Talking to them however is, answering any and all questions they have is.

Secondly, I’m a proud member of the BDSM community here on Tumblr, have been for over 2 years.

In my time on here I’ve seen and discovered this community is very protective of itself; abusers and/or wannabes are called out, numerous child pornography blogs have been reported.

There’s a whole community online of people, both Dominants and submissives alike, with up to 40 years of experience that share their knowledge, that take new people under their wing, that openly demonstrate the difference between porn BDSM and real life relationships.

New, curious people – when of legal age – were all welcomed with open arms by all of us. An insane amount of questions have been answered, advice and guidance have been offered freely to anyone who genuinely wanted to explore the BDSM world.

Now, now you’re pushing all these new aspiring dominants/submissives into uncharted territory! Safe, Sane and Consensual has been thrown out of the window for the BDSM community.

What I wanted, hell what every single one of my followers wanted, was to get rid of the porn bots! What we wanted was to get rid of the child pornography.

What we wanted was a safe environment for all of us.

What we’re left with is a whole lot of the opposite. Making Tumblr Safe Again has made the whole Internet an even more unsafer place.

What you could, and should have done, is reach out to the blogs with the largest follower base, made an open invitation to any and all smaller blogs who wanted to help you make Tumblr a safer place. Yes, we should have been vetted amidst this process. No, no one would have objected.

I’m beyond disappointed Tumblr. What started as an no doubt good and spot on idea has left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Sincerely,

Dirty

There you go tumblr, considered reason in response to your stupidity.

So eloquent I’m reblogging this again.

tumblrpocalypse | Day II:

mudwerks:

the scene is chaos, bodies everywhere. there is no organization – no chain of command, no system of any kind.

nipple-mines everywhere. Some are flagged, some aren’t…some are flagged inaccurately so there is NO WAY to tell if you can tread safely over any particular path through this fetid jungle of discarded NSFW posts.

It’s in their eyes – their eyes are vacant and hopeless, without that gleam of promise from 2 days ago.

The tumblrers are weary from disarming falsely flagged posts over and over, only to look up – and see that in their place – an endless armada of mis-flagged posts is streaming in on the horizon.

we are losing hope…

RE: “We’re removing content, not followers”

jinxproof:

“We’re removing content, not people. However, those who repeatedly and deliberately post new content that violates our updated guidelines may have their account deactivated per our Terms of Service.”

A sizable portion of Tumblr’s users have stuck with the platform because they are free to post what they find beautiful, without the risk of removal a’la Instagram.

Doesn’t Tumblr want to stay relevent? WHY NOT LEVERAGE THE FREEDOM THAT INSTAGRAM CANNOT OFFER?

Don’t Point at Tumblr, Point at Verizon

I don’t need to re-explain the anger and frustration going through the Tumblr community over the impending adult-content ban. Soon enough, this NSFW blog will empty out like all the rest. But before that happens, I would like to share some thoughts on where to point our frustrations.

Right now, much of the criticism by targeted blogs has been against Tumblr. But this is missing the mark. Our community anger should be placed squarely on Verizon, Tumblr’s new corporate parent.

In terms of Verizon’s entire media portfolio, Tumblr is just a blip on the radar, especially in terms of ad revenue. But you know what is important? Verizon’s reputation and branding. The more we refocus on slamming Verizon, not just here but on Twitter, Instagram, Google Reviews, and more, then more they’ll sweat their decision.

I don’t know how much difference it will make in the long run, but to really get our voice heard among corporate giants we’re better off aiming for the top.

Reblog!!!!

Fair enough. Yes

The time has finally come.
We’re all getting booted from this platform, but we’re a community, and
we’ll rebuild elsewhere.  The current alternative
sites are less than ideal, but maybe one will be suitable, or a new platform
will arise in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, let’s make sure we export everything so that
all our work was not in vain. We suggest a few different ways to do this, to
ensure that nothing is lost.

1.  Send your email to
your favorite blogs to stay in touch.

Our email is: alongthehike@gmail.com

——-

2.  Export a list of
people that you follow, so you don’t forget any names/blogs accounts

While logged in, go to: http://www.tumblr.com/following.opml

This will automatically download a list of people you follow.  You can open the file in Excel.

————

3.  Export your blog/site
within Tumblr.

Go to https://www.tumblr.com/settings/blog/yourblogname

At the bottom click export.
It will take a while to process.
Once ready, click download backup.  Ideally we’ll be able to import these files into another platform, but you should probably do the following steps just in case.

——

4. Download your full site.

This is easy, but will take a while, and probably a few GB’s.

DL: https://www.httrack.com/

Choose the folder to download into.

Enter your site’s URL and run the program.  It will probably take a few hours.

“It allows you to download a World Wide Web site from the
Internet to a local directory, building recursively all directories, getting
HTML, images, and other files from the server to your computer. HTTrack
arranges the original site’s relative link-structure. Simply open a page of the
“mirrored” website in your browser, and you can browse the site from
link to link, as if you were viewing it online. HTTrack can also update an
existing mirrored site, and resume interrupted downloads. HTTrack is fully
configurable, and has an integrated help system.”

——–

5. Download all media from all of your favorite blogs.

TumblThree works great.

Download the file that says application: https://github.com/johanneszab/TumblThree/releases

Open the program and on the bottom left enter your blog’s
URL.  In settings make a new folder to
which the files should be downloaded.  Right click your blog and “add to Queue” then
click “Crawl”.

You can do this with any blog you follow, but it will only
take images, and no comments, tags, etc., hence the need to download your
entire site (and/or other sites) using HTTrack in step 4 above.

Downloading your “likes” is a bit more tricky.

Click settings, then connection, and log in with your Tumblr
credentials.

Add the following URL: https://www.tumblr.com/liked/by/yourblogname

Then add to queue and crawl again.

—-

With these
files/exports we should be able to migrate elsewhere and rebuild our community.  It will be hard to credit everyone for their
work, but we’ll do our best.

If you have any questions on the above just respond here, or
via email.

We’re to be kicked out on the 17th, but it will probably happen
earlier, so the sooner you get started on the above the better.

It’s been a pleasure sharing with you all over the past few
years.

See you in the next place!

i dont really… WANT… to leave tumblr. ive been here since 2011

no other platform has the right format for me to just randomly barf actual thoughts, joaks, and genuine creative content all in the same breath. i dont know how to compartmentalize

every other platform you gotta be a real person. Here you are you’re icon and username and whatever your hyperfixation is at the current moment

It will be a sad day when this ends and it will be soon as its all part of conservative enforcement on content control before selling a product and yahoo is in need of selling so this is going to happen. A few rotten eggs that they are unwilling to enforce and bad management is ending a loving community . Thank you all for the dance . I will keep posting till the new year .. but I hope to see you somewhere on the other side.

You can save all your posts with these instructions
I’ll do it too just to be safe, I honestly don’t remember what I’ve posted here over the years.

You can also import a copy of your blog into wordpress. YMMV if you have a huge amount of posts.

Oh thanks!! This is also a good one!! In case the first doesn’t work or you don’t have the memory for a whole zip of your blog~

I totally forgot my WordPress account info. Note to self save this

10+ years of posts…

WordPress might be the better option here.
